Rules for Decorating with Wall Mirrors

Mirrors make a great addition to a home’s wall, opening up space, reflecting light, and generally enhancing the décor. But despite what you might think, it’s not as simple as just hanging your freshly bought mirror on a wall.

Whether they be square mirrors, round wall mirrors, framed gold mirrors or large wall mirrors, there are a few guidelines to remember when decorating with them in your home.

Big mirrors are great for small rooms

While other oversized wall hangings won’t look great when hung in a small room, mirrors do. You can think of large wall mirrors Australia more as windows than as wall hangings, as they provide an otherwise pokey and small room with much needed depth. Other cramped spaces such as staircases and hallways are also great mirror candidates.

If you’re smart with your placement, you can have your mirror reflecting something you love, like a piece of artwork on the opposite wall, or a beautiful chandelier or light fixture.

Don’t go overboard

While a couple of mirrors placed strategically around your house can make for a great look, any more can ruin it. Use mirrors sparingly, and use them to only reflect the highlights of your house, or to bounce much needed light into a room.

This is particularly pertinent in the kitchen, where they’re totally unnecessary, and the bedroom, where you won’t want to wake up to your own bed-hair every morning. And it should go without saying, but never use a mirror on the ceiling. Particularly in the bedroom.

Choose a shape to suit your home

Shapes can have a huge impact on the feel that a mirror gives a room. As a very general rule, square mirrors tend to provide a modern feel, which is perfect for new homes and apartments, while round wall mirrors can give off a more classical vibe, which will suit older homes better. To push the vintage feel further, look for silver-lined or gold mirrors.

Try out mirrored furniture

Mirrors trick your eye into thinking that they aren’t there at all. If you’re creative, this can mean that the big piece of unsightly furniture – a chest of drawers, a desk or a filing cabinet – could be hidden, or at least be made more interesting, by simply being covered by mirrors.

This can give a room the illusion of having more floor space, as well as dressing up tired old furniture.

If you know how to use them, mirrors can be a flexible, simple and effective decorating option. So what are you waiting for? Let’s get reflective!
